5 Books to Read When You Feel Like You Are on Auto-Pilot

These days, it’s normal to feel a bit lost and uninspired. Who else feels like they are on auto-pilot because of the lack of spontaneity and never-ending routine? It’s easy to get caught up with hopelessness and feel like we’re stuck in a rut. Books are a great source of wisdom and knowledge easily accessible to us to help us navigate our way through life.

Here are five book recommendations to read when you are feeling unmotivated:

  1. 24/6: The Power of Unplugging One Day a Week by Tiffany Shlain

This book is about giving up screen time one day a week to increase productivity, get more creative, and connect more with your inner self. These days, we may have been stuck in front of our laptop screens or mindlessly scrolling through our feeds almost 24/7 (especially those who WFH!). Shlain explains a practice called “Technology Shabbat” that will work wonders for your mind, body, and soul.

  1. The Upside of Stress: Why Stress is Good for You, and how to Get Good at It by Kelly McGonigal

Stress is a part of our everyday lives. It turns out that the best way to handle stress is to simply understand and accept it instead of constantly trying to get rid of it. Kelly McGonigal, PhD, explains practical and life-changing ways on how to cultivate a mindset that embraces stress as well as activate the brain’s natural ability to learn from challenges.

  1. You are a Badass by Jen Sincero

The stories we tell about ourselves or our personal narrative directly influences our self-image; thus affects how we live our lives. You Are a Badass by travelling success coach, Jen Sincero, teaches us how to identify our limiting beliefs in order to create a life we love, empower ourselves, which will in turn, help us create the money we want!

“You are a Badass in Making Money” is a great sequel worth reading. It reinforces the ideas from “You are a Badass” and explains practical tips on manifesting abundance to build wealth.

  1. Talk like TED by Carmine Gallo

Carmine Gallo enumerates the key elements of a successful presentation by analyzing the most watched TED talks. Now that we live in a world where ideas are a currency, it is crucial to learn how to communicate effectively in order to influence others.

Besides the practical presentation and public speaking skills, Gallo empowers his readers to stay true to themselves. There is nothing more powerful than being authentic and staying true to ourselves. Passion is the foundation of mastery. When we are passionate about what we do, we have the drive to learn more about it and master them. This book is a great read that will inspire you to search for your “niche”.

Grit by Angela Duckworth

  1. Grit by Angela Duckworth

If you haven’t read this bestseller, you’re missing out. Angela Duckworth explains that the secret to success is not talent but the combination of passion and persistence called “grit”. In order to achieve our goals in life, we must be ready to constantly keep going despite our fears and the setbacks we encounter.

While we can simply just watch videos on YouTube to learn something new quickly, I still think reading and dedicating time to reading is highly therapeutic and a great activity to incorporate in our daily routine. It’s great to switch off your phones and laptops for a while and pick up a book. Successful CEOs read an average of 60 books a year to stay inspired and to keep learning so reading is definitely worth incorporating to your daily routine.
