Go Big or Go Home: Dumplin’ Might be the Body-Positive Film We All Need

Throughout the years, Hollywood and all of the movie industry has been changing its ways in representing all forms of women on screen. Thin, thick, small, or big – we are slowly moving towards a society that accepts women in different body forms. While the problem of body-shaming is still prominent in society, film and media has developed and continues to learn how to represent different women on screen in the most positive way possible. A lot of films were made to promote body positivity and has casted plus-sized women for the lead roles.

This year, Netflix will be contributing to the list of films that promote body positivity by releasing the film Dumplin’.

Based on the novel written by Julie Murphy, the film will be exploring Willowdean Dickson’s highs and lows as a plus-sized woman. It will highlight how Willowdean, played by Danielle Macdonald, has always been comfortable with who she is regardless of her shape but chooses to show the world her worth. Being the daughter of a former beauty queen Rosie Dickson, who will be played by none other than the beautiful Jennifer Anniston, Willowdean is set to change society’s standards on beauty. She enters a beauty pageant along with slim built women as she wants to show the world that she and all the other plus-sized women deserve to be up on stage as much as any thin slim built woman does.

While Netflix has released Sierra Burgess is a Loser, a film that promotes body positivity, Dumplin’ might be a whole new body-positive film which perfectly captures the struggle of plus-sized women and how their insecurities can be their strengths in empowering themselves.

While the film industry still has its shortcomings in positively representing women in all forms, films such as Dumplin’ might be a stepping stone towards a progressive representation of plus-sized women in society. Dumplin’ might be the body-positive film that we all need as it features a character who uses the qualities which society sees as her insecurities as her strength in proving that women are beautiful in whatever shape they are in. Moreover, the film includes talented actors and actresses such as Luke Benward, Dove Cameron, and many more! Plus, the film features a song from the iconic Dolly Parton and Sia, entitled “Here I Am”, and has already captured our emotions.

Hopefully this film will not disappoint us as most of us are looking forward to seeing it.

Dumplin’ will be on Netflix on December 7, 2018.
