Christmas season is here, and we all know what that means – buying gifts for our loved ones! However, at the mention of gift-buying, an image probably already comes to your head: over-crowded stores, lack of parking spaces, long lines at the cashier, and settling for other gifts after finding out some items are already sold out. Not to mention keeping an eye on your belongings as some might take advantage of the opportunity to steal.
To avoid the stress of shopping and hopefully retain your Christmas spirit as you buy gifts, here are several tips:
1. Start early.
Here in the Philippines, Christmas season starts as early as September. The wisest plan would be to start buying gifts early so that you will avoid the shopping rush of other people. You would also be able to relax and avoid overspending because you already thought ahead. By getting the gift-buying out of the way, you can focus on other Christmas festivities like putting up decorations, watching holiday-themed movies, and attending Christmas parties.
2. Scout ahead.
In buying your gifts, it is important to plan what you’re about to buy. Make a list of gifts for each person and then scout ahead as to where you will buy those particular gifts. If you plan to go to a particular mall, you can also plan the order of the stores you’ll visit so that you will save time and energy. Christmas shopping also leads to impulsive buys as there are lots of sales and interesting things on display. To avoid overspending, plan your budget and stick to it. Allot a budget for gifts, emergency fund, and extra fund. That way, you’ll have more control over your spending.
3. Avoid peak hours.
It is common knowledge that there’s a lot more people in malls on weekends or on the day right after payday. On weekdays, there’s always more people after 5 P.M., when most people get off of work. When you plan to shop, avoid these peak days and peak hours. There will be less stress for you to shop when you have less people shopping with you. You can avoid going shoulder-to-shoulder will other consumers as you try to search for the perfect gift.

4. Shop at unconventional stores.
Most people are already buying department stores for their gift-buying plans. You can buy your gifts at other stores where most people would not think of getting their gifts. You will realize that these stores might have some great finds at cheaper prices. Aside from having less chances of the item you’re looking for being sold out, your gifts would also be more unique compared to the other gifts the person might receive.
5. Shop online.
Many consumers have already taken advantage of the fact that they can go shopping on the comfort of their homes. You can shop online for gifts as well with all the online stores there are. Just make sure to buy in advance to have enough time allowance for shipping. Make sure to buy from a reputable store and check their policies on online shopping. Buying online early will also be very handy in the case that some products may be damaged and/or you want to get a refund.
6. Make your own gift.
At the end of the day, there is always the option to make your own gifts as opposed to merely buying them. The person receiving your gift would see that you really made an effort into thinking of a suitable gift that he/she would appreciate. A homemade gift would surely be a memorable one as it would also show how much you know the person.

This Christmas season, it is good to remember that there are other ways of showing love for the people around us aside from giving gifts. We may think it is the day to show appreciation and gratitude, but in reality, we should do that all year round. Happy Holidays!
