Based on the comic book series written by Gerald Way, “The Umbrella Academy” brings together seven children, all miraculously born and each ingrained with supernatural abilities. They were trained by their adoptive father Sir Reginald Hargreeves to save the world from the apocalypse, but they can’t even seem to save each other from themselves.
There’s a lot of mystery about Sir Hargreeves and his family, despite what one of the show’s most lovable character (aka Pogo) said. The chimpanzee slash butler said that all of Sir Reginald Hargreeves’ secrets have finally come to light. But we can’t seem to agree—the show actually brought up a lot of things that remain unanswered. Besides the obvious fact that we need to find out where “The Umbrella Academy” is headed to next, these are the questions that we continue to ponder upon as we look forward to the show’s second season:
Hargreeves’ past
What did Hargreeves do in between the time he moved to America and his adoption of the Umbrella Academy? Why did he earn the title eccentric billionaire? Why was he always busy?
Lone android
What is the technology behind Grace/Mom? Do other androids like her exist in the world?
Impending apocalypse
How did Hargreeves know that the end of the world was already near? Why was he super hard on his children and kept on emphasizing that they needed to save the world? Perhaps he knew the timing of the apocalypse because he was previously part of the Commission. If you recall, he also seemed to know a lot about time travel when Five asked him about it.

Gone, not forgotten
Pogo, the family’s trusted assistant and dear friend to the seven siblings, didn’t survive Vanya’s rampage. While he’s already out of the picture, we believe he deserves a backstory. We want the next season to dedicate him one. We all know that Reginald most likely experimented with animals, but to what extent?
The brother they don’t talk about
Just how exactly did Ben die? There’s a statue of him and all, and it’s been established that his death was unexpected, but how did it happen?
Five, who?
What is Five’s real name? Everyone else has one (aside from their number). And why was his name left out on purpose?
The mystery of the Commission
In one of the episodes, Hazel mentions something about Manila 1902 to Cha Cha. It was not expounded on, but given the date and place, it would seem that the partners had a mission during the last year of the Filipino-American War. How about that for a fun fact?
Anyway, during this season, we did get explanations on how the Commission works, and we saw their old-school office when Five was temporarily brought in as part of management (no wonder they used briefcases as time-traveling devices). However, apart from the Handler, we don’t know who else is part of it. How did the founding members start it? More importantly, how do they know which timeline should be observed? They actually remind us of the ill-fated Time Masters from DC’s “Legends of the Tomorrow.” Maybe our dysfunctional heroes will finally meet the Commission in Season 2 and ask these questions themselves?
The missing 36
Hargreeves was able to adopt 7 children from a possible pool of 43. At the very least, there are still 36 powered individuals out there. Where are they, and what have they done so far? If someone else can travel through time like Five, then it’s possible that the family encounters them in another timeline. We can’t wait to see their paths cross in the future (or, maybe, the past)!
The Umbrella Academy” is now available for streaming on Netflix.
