The final verdict is out: ‘Green Book’ wins over Alfonso Cuarón’s ‘Roma’

Alfonso Cuarón is the first person ever to be nominated for both directing and cinematography, and he won in both categories for “Roma.” After being announced as this year’s Best Director, the only category left for the Mexican filmmaker to win was Best Picture.

Except that he didn’t. The announcement came with “Green Book” as the title sealed inside the envelope.

As anticipated, “Green Book” emerged as this year’s dark horse after the Academy’s most-coveted prize. The film’s other awards include: Best Original Screenplay, and Mahershala Ali as Best Supporting Actor.

The film has also won the same award at the Golden Globes and the Toronto Film Festival. “Green Book” is named after the handbook that helped African-American travelers around segregated America.

Set in the 60s, it follows the story of black pianist Don Shirley and his bodyguard Tony Vallelonga. “The whole story is about love,” said director Peter Farrelly. “It’s about loving each other despite our differences and finding out the truth about who we are: We’re the same people.”
