A lot of celebrity names have been thrown around for the iconic role of Mars Ravelo’s “Darna.” But as ABS-CBN looks to tell a coming-of-age tale of the Filipino superhero, the producers wanted someone youthful and courageous.
Among 300 artists who have auditioned, Jane De Leon was a standout. ABS-CBN Films managing director Olivia Lamasan revealed it was a unanimous decision to hand the actress the film’s titular role.
The 20-year-old actress was previously part “Halik” and “La Luna Sangre.” She was also part of the girl group Girltrends.
Liza Soberano was originally cast for the role, but had to withdraw from the project due to a finger injury. The superhero was played by Vilma Santos, Lorna Tolentino, Angel Locsin, and Marian Rivera.
The film is set to be released in 2020.
