alike.com.ph—The world has forgotten the greatest songs ever made, and only one struggling musician remembers it.
Himesh Patel plays Jack Malik in Danny Boyle’s newest film, “Yesterday.” Jack was on the brink of quitting his dream of becoming a songwriter, until fate makes him survive a car accident. But in traditional rom-com fashion, strange phenomenon lurk in perfect timing—Jack’s accident happens at the exact same time of a mysterious global blackout.
After getting discharged from the hospital, Jack discovers no one in his circle remembers the lyrics to “Yesterday.” To his surprise his listeners thought he was the one who wrote it—and on top of that, the Beatles-original song moved them to tears, which made them compliment his ingenuity with words. It has become a crazy world that remembers Coldplay but not the cultural phenomenon that gained its roots from Liverpool.
Every revelatory scene in the trailer is hilarious as Boyle’s movie reimagines how the modern world would react to the beauty, sentimentality, and emotive power of the Beatles’ song catalogue.
“Yesterday” also stars Ed Sheeran as himself, playing the role of superstar-slash-top producer who gives the idiotic suggestion of changing “Hey Jude” to “Hey Dude.” We’ve only been given a sneak peek and we know the film would make us laugh for hours.
Richard Curtis (yup, the same guy behind “Notting Hill,” “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” and “Love Actually”) gives us another hilariously entertaining story. “Yesterday” mainly relies on its epic humor and the promise of a dazed adventure of a lifetime.
Now here’s to hoping Sir Paul McCartney actually makes a cameo.
“Yesterday” will premier in Philippine cinemas on June 16.
