Fox’s abrupt cancellation of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” sent fans into a frenzy. Online petitions were brought up, odes to the show were being published on websites and social media pages, and everyone was suddenly gushing about their favorite 99 moments. But lo and behold, NBC came to the rescue—it picked up the show for its sixth season, which is set to premier on Jan. 10 in the States.
Cool, cool, cool, cool, cool—we’ll be getting more doses of the 99.
However, following the announcement of the new season, Chelsea Peretti, also known as Gina Linetti—the human form of the one hundred emoji—posted a thread on Twitter last October, bidding “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” fans goodbye. Which is, let’s be honest, a very Gina Linetti move.
B99 fans. Hiiiiiiiiiiii. Chelsea Peretti, here. I won’t be doing a full season of Brooklyn Nine Nine in Season 6. But that doesn’t mean I won’t ever be back, winky face emoji, heart emoji. I want to thank you for the hours you spent watching Gina be Gina:

Fans were left heartbroken and tremendously shocked about her leaving the show after 5 seasons. Gina Linetti is like the Paris Hilton of the show—exactly how she regards herself. She is a natural scene-stealer. An egomaniacal civilian administrator slash greatest assistant who thinks that Beyonce is her spiritual twin and would spend $5,000 to buy backstage passes to a Britney concert only to ask her: “You think you a better dancer than me?”
If you think Gina is all weird and stuff—yes, she is, but fans already know by now that she’s got lots of tricks up her sleeves. This woman really knows what she’s talking about. She knows the 99 precinct and the people who work there inside out. The actress hinted that she’ll be doing guestings on the show, but it just wouldn’t be the same without her in the weekly episodes. Thankfully, Gina left us a handful of great moments with snarky comebacks and heartwarming sarcasm to look back on (and make us miss her all the more). Here are some of the most unforgettable Gina moments in the history of the 99:
SEASON 1 – THE GINA EXPERIMENT
The squad was invited to Captain Holt’s birthday party by Kevin, his husband. Gina was able to mingle with some of Kevin’s intellectual friends, a group of psychologists. She shared her thoughts on how she would make the perfect American president based upon her skill set, dance ability, and blood lust—which clearly sparked fascination among those present in the room. Gina was, of course, ended up talking about herself the whole night, telling them stuff like “30 percent of men are attracted to her,” and how her mother cried when she was born because she knew she will never be better than the daughter she gave birth to.
Gina’s confidence is definitely higher than the Eiffel Tower! Gina loves her self so much, she would probably mount her own personal monument—or she would probably ask her social media followers to do that (hello, Ginazon). We never know, Gina is enigmatic and powerful—definitely the human form of the one hundred emoji!
SEASON 2 – THE LINETTI–BOYLE WEDDING
Who can forget the Gina-Boyle affair? Yes, it was quite unexpected, and it was Boyle’s first casual relationship! But the most surprising thing to come out of their “smooshing booties” was they unknowingly set up their parents on a romantic evening together.
Gina (being Gina) wanted to give her mother a perfect wedding, ordering the whole squad to fulfill certain duties and run some errands for the wedding preparations. There have been quite a number of mishaps like the lost ring, priest’s last-minute cancellation, broken smoke machine, and the groom breaking down, but Gina still managed to give her mom and Charles’ dad a wedding they deserve. It seemed weird to see Gina give love advice—especially to Charles’ dad—but I must say that she can be a romantic sometimes.
SEASON 3 – GINA’S AN INSPIRATION
Captain Holt was transferred to the PR Department because of the evil Wuntch. He was forced to leave the 99 and Gina decided to go with him. Their first order of business was to name the NYPD mascot, to which Gina suggested that the pigeon looks like a Ray Jay. And if you didn’t know it by now, Gina Lenetti is always right—the pigeon really looked like a Ray Jay.
Captain Holt hated working behind a desk. He reached his limit with Wuntch’s pettiness and decided to quit. But thanks again to our heroine, Gina “awesome” Linetti, and her wise words, she was able to convince Holt to stay. She told him that she followed him to PR because she figured out that PR would be the easiest path to launch her reality show, Linetti Set Go. But she also stayed with him because she thinks that he is great and that he made everything he touch better—which led to Holt regaining his confidence.
She surely does knows exactly what inspires others and herself. Talk about hitting two birds with one stone!
SEASON 4 – GINA SAVES THE 99
The NYPD planned to shut down one precinct in Brooklyn since the crime rates are down. Things weren’t looking up when Veronica, Terry’s resentful ex-lover, was the one assigned to audit. Veronica seemed to have a rough past with Terry, which is why she gave the 99 a low remark. The whole precinct was startled when Captain Holt announced that it seemed like there is a big chance that the 99 would be shut down. All except for Gina who spent her remaining time pranking detectives and live streaming it to entertain her followers. But also thanks to Gina and her “Ginazon” followers that the 99 was saved!
Gina accidentally live-streamed the whole speech of Captain Holt and it gained a lot of sympathy from her social media followers—which led them to protest to the commissioner’s office, requesting not to shut the 9-9 precinct down. A very FTW moment for Gina and her social media influence! Spending most of her time on her phone and making fun of the detectives did wonders after all.
SEASON 4 – THE ULTIMATE HUMAN SLASH GENIUS
If you are a “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” fan, you probably know the iconic Halloween Heist. The annual competition in the precinct where the detectives, including Captain Holt, try to steal a certain item and keep it in their possession until midnight. The winner of the Heist will have the honor to be called “The ultimate detective slash genius.”
On the fourth run of the competition, Gina carefully studied the squad and crafted a plan to make them believe that she is on Jake’s side, even trying to divert everyone’s attention to Terry while she steals the plaque.
Gina wanted to win for one reason: She thought that the word “detective” on the plaque seems discriminatory for someone who is not a detective—just like her in a swarm of detectives and cops. She made them change the plaque to “the ultimate human slash genius.” Yay for Gina promoting all- inclusivity! Hearts emoji!
SEASON 5 – GINA DIGS
During the 100th episode of the show, Gina finally returned after disappearing on several episodes during the latest season (she was on maternity leave). The Cyber Crimes division was moved next to the 99th precinct which ended up using all their bandwidth, causing problems with the internet connection. The squad needed the help of someone who can scare anyone—which is, of course, the one and only Gina Linetti. She saved the day by making quite a dramatic entrance and she intimidated the Cyber Crimes division leader by revealing some of his embarrassing little secrets which she found online. Gina digs information like a pro—even better than a detective sometimes.
Surely, there are tons of Gina moments from the past five seasons which really made a lot of people (including this writer) adore her so much. She’s a legend in making us anticipate every move she makes and every word she says. She has a really witty sarcasm and has a different way of viewing and analyzing things. She’s exquisite.
It’s hard to imagine a Gina-less “Brooklyn Nine-Nine.” There’s no woman sitting in the precinct all day who’s absorbing all the radiation from her phone. No one to mock Amy and her old-fashioned clothing. And no one to get under Boyle’s skin just to disagree on his personal preferences in life. *Cries in emoji*
The “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” squad won’t be the same without Gina Linetti. But we’ll be crossing our fingers for her comeback. We never know, after all, she’s Gina Linetti!
She surely knows how to make an entrance and *sniff* an exit. She once said: “Honestly, I’m going to last forever. You hear that bitches? I’m gonna last forever.”
Yes, Gina, we hear you.
