A Monocrete Construction crane collapsed this afternoon, April 10 2018, during construction of the new STI Academic Center in Pasay City, leaving two confirmed dead and six injured. The accident occurred on the corner of P. Calle and Edsa around noon, causing massive traffic in the area.
According to the police report, the crane was attempting to raise itself when a dip in the hydraulic cylinder pressure caused the crane to collapse. Hydraulic cylinders are used to push cranes upward as it makes itself taller. As the crane fell, it struck the adjacent Core Tower. The accident claimed the life of the crane operator, Jonathan Clavecillas, 32, and one unidentified person.
Jonathan was rushed to San Juan De Dios Hospital, but was declared dead on arrival.
The other injured are also being treated at San Juan De Dios. Security guards Kumbo Mabunay and Jay Ballon; fellow construction workers Francisco Angcatan, 59, Melvin Yosores, 28, and Elmer Sedol, 46; and Chinese national Liu Shen Xiu, 30.
Construction on the STI Academic Center began in May of 2017, and was scheduled to be completed in school year 2018-2019.

As of this moment, the site has not been cleared as further investigation is conducted. No comment has been made from Monocrete Construction or STI.
