To hell with movie critics—“Bohemian Rhapsody” just won the Best Motion Picture in the Drama category at the 2019 Golden Globe Awards. The highest-grossing music biopic of all time is a celebration of iconic British Rock Band Queen, and more so, its frontman Freddie Mercury.
The film shows Mercury’s polarity made from his confidence and insecurities, the figure being the central essence of the band and the music it made. Rami Malek, who flawlessly played the part, was also awarded for his performance and named this year’s Best Actor in a Motion Picture (Drama). The actor was widely praised for perfecting Mercury’s mannerisms and stage movements.
“To Freddie Mercury, this is for you and because of you,” Malek said as he ended his acceptance speech.
“Green Book” also turned out to be this year’s dark horse, bringing home a total of three Golden Globes. It was recognized as Best Screenplay, Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy) and Best Actor in a Supporting Role. The film is based on the real-life story of an unlikely friendship shared by Dr. Don Shirley and Tony ‘Lip’ Vallelonga.
The heartwarming tale that is unraveled during the Jazz pianist’s tour is actually more than a showcase of his ingenuity, it tackles underlying racial conflicts rampant in the 1960s. We won’t be surprised if the title emerges once again as an Oscar winner.
As our guts told us, “Roma” took home the Best Motion Picture for a foreign language category, while Alfonso Cuaron was named Best Director. “This film wouldn’t have been possible without the colors that made me who I am. Gracias mi familia, gracias Mexico,” Cuaron said.
